Dear Dr. Johnson,
I hope all's well with you. My first question is about the usage of the word "maintain". Are all of the following sentences grammatically correct and do they make sense?
1. I exercise to maintain my health.
2. To maintain my health I exercise.
3. I don't smoke to maintain my health.
4. To maintain my health I don't smoke.

Now for my second question, about the expression “weekend getaway”. Are all of the following sentences grammatically correct and do they make sense?
1. I need a weekend getaway.
2. I want a weekend getaway.
3. I took a weekend getaway to Honk Kong.
4. I'm on a weekend getaway in Beijing.

Now for my third question, about the word "tarnish". Are all of the following sentences grammatically correct and do they make sense?
1. He tried to tarnish my reputation.
2. He tarnished my reputation.

Answer
Yes - all are correct

The only one which isn't what a native English speaker would say is

3. I don't smoke to maintain my health.

because it is ambiguous

it COULD mean

I don't smoke to maintain my health - but for some other reason

My first degree was in mechanical engineering (HNC). I then switched to literary studies and philosophy. My second degree was a BA in English and American Literature (from Manchester University - UK). I also have an MA in Comparative Literary Studies, and my doctoral thesis (PhD) was in the relationship between literature and politics.
