General Writing and Grammar Help/Placement of Either in a Sentence

Question
Is this correct?

"Joseph realizes he must abandon either Tessa or everything he believes."

Context: This is a query letter for a novel about a Catholic priest (Joseph) who falls in love with a married woman (Tessa). So I'm saying Joseph's choices are:

1. Abandon Tessa (i.e. get a transfer away from his "proximate occasion of sin")
2. Abandon "everything he believes" about sin and elope with the woman he loves

I first wrote "Joseph realizes he must either abandon Tessa or everything he believes," because to me, that "sounds better." But grammatically, I think it should be "abandon either" and then the choices?

I guess I could cheat with: "Joseph realizes he must either abandon Tessa or abandon everything he believes."

This is the final "punchline" of the query, so I need to get it right!

Thank you!

Answer
I'm sorry it took so long to reply as I did not receive my e mail notice.

"Joseph realizes he must abandon either Tessa or everything he believes."

This is good but, it could be more clarified as:

"Joseph realizes he must abandon either Tessa or everything he believes in."
