Question
Dear Ted:

Which of the following sentences is correct?

1) Only soon did he realize that his wife was an escort.

2) Only soon he realized that his wife was an escort.

If both are possible, do they mean the same thing?

If so, which would you use?

Also, would you please give some other examples of sentences beginning with "only soon"?

Many, many thanks for your kind help.

Paolo

Answer
Dear Paolo:

1) Only soon did he realize that his wife was an escort.

2) Only soon he realized that his wife was an escort.

*** Where did you find these sentences?  Using only + soon rarely occurs, and I have never
seen a sentence beginning with these two words.

Here's an example:

He was overwhelming elected president, but only soon thereafter, he was assassinted.

*** I don't like the sentence I just wrote.

In your two examples, I would begin with "Only THEN did he realize . . . . "
