Expert: Nicholas Morphew Date: 1/5/2008 Subject: red hair vs blonde
Question If both parents have red hair; is it possible for their offspring to be true
blond (not strawberry). Or will the child always show red. It is a little
confusing since both are recessive traits. Any info you can give is a help.
Answer If both parents a red haired, they must have all the red haired alleles which are all recessive. Their presence eliminates the chances of the child not having these alleles. From my knowledge, it would be highly unlikely for the child to have anything other than red hair.
Blonde hair is simply the lack of the dark pigment eumelanin or any other pigment for that matter. It's a step towards albinoism in a way. Having both parents display traits that are known to be recessive drastically reduce the likelihood of anything else showing.
