Question
Dear Prof Natarajan

Do fishes make sound?.

If no, Could there be the biological reason of absence of Vocal cords?.

Thanks
Prashant

Answer
Hi Prashant,

Fish lack voice box. They use two main methods: stridulation," where they rub their teeth, spines, or other skeletal parts together and "drumming," where muscles around the swim bladder contract rapidly and, as the name suggests, use the swim bladder just like a drum.
The fishe's "songs" can range from the quite simple "click", to buzzing and growling. They use it during mating/pairing events.

Best,
