Geocities Webpage Creator (HTML) - Uploading Excel Sheets

Expert: Erik - 3/1/2001

Question
Hello Erik:

I run a number of office "betting pools", most of which I keep the stats and standings on Excel spreadsheets. I would like to set up a web home page, where anytime any of the participants desire, they could go online to see the latest update. I guess I have 2 questions: First, can I upload Excel sheets? Second, to read it, the user must have a sililar version of Excel, could I put the sheet in a read-only text format that anyone could access? Thank You.

Answer
I assume you are using GeoCities.

GeoCities allows Excel files (.xls) as shown at http://geocities.yahoo.com/main/info/system/filetypes.html

If the person visiting the Excel file has Internet Explorer 4 or higher, the file will load right in Internet Explorer.  Otherwise, a box will come up asking the person to download the file.  Any time someone downloads something, it is read-only.  The only problem with leaving it in .xls format is, the person downloading the file has to have Microsoft Excel.

To solve this problem, you can convert it to .htm (HTML file) by going to FILE->SAVE AS and under "Save As Type" select Web Page.  Then you will have a normal web page which you can upload using EZupload located at http://us.geocities.yahoo.com/v/ul.html

I hope this helps!
Erik
