Question
Are the Ural Mountains and the Caucasus Mountains truly natural borders between Europe and Asia?

Answer
Hi Marlon,

The Ural Mountains have long been considered the dividing line between Europe and Asia.  It is where the two continental plates meet.  The Caucasus Mountains along the southern portion divide Europe from South Asia including Turkey now considered as part of geographic Europe but is actually Asia Minor as a geographic land mass.  The eastern Mediterranean is made up of several smaller tectonic plates being squashed out of existence.  This is partly evidenced by the East African rift falt zone and extends up through the Middle East and includes the Red Sea, the Dead Sea and the Bosporous straights.

I hope this helps.
