Geology/Geology vs. Geophysics

Question
Would a degree in Geology and Geophysics be the same thing? If so why and if not why not?

Answer
Hello Andrew,

Certainly not. Now a days people are not distinugishing but in reality, a geologist is a person who explains the subject Geology whereas a Geophyscisit is a person who basically deals with the Geophysical methods (acquisition, processing and interpretation of geophyscial data). Both branches meet together when we talk about subsurface exploration. Geology explains the origin of the things that a geophysical method picks up (e.g. a hydrocarbon trap).

So, consider both subjects seperate.

Good luck and may you have a prosperous future.

Expertise

I can answer to the questions related to the following disciplines mainly: geology, geophysics, general geomorphology, stratigraphy, seismic stratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy. I would like to answer Geophysical question too with keen interest specifically exploration related. I want to hear from users for their queries on exploration geophysics/geology. Especially, in the discipline of Reservoir Characterization from multi-discipline data. The questions related to basics and interpretational applications would be most welcome. I can not answer the questions related to astronomly, ecology/environmetal sciences, mineralogy and petrology/petrophysics. Such categories are not my discipline of experience.

Four years in different services with additional case studies of Pakistan, China, Saudi Arabia and Netherlands offshore.
