About Farrukh Qayyum
Expertise
I can answer questions related to following disciplines mainly: geology, geophysics, general geomorphology, stratigraphy, seismic stratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy. I would like to answer Geophysical question too with keen interest specifically exploration related. I want to hear from users for their queries on exploration geophysics/geology. Especially, in the discipline of Reservoir Characterization from multi-discipline data. The questions related to basics and interpretational applications would be most welcome. I can not answer the questions related to astronomly, ecology/environmetal sciences, mineralogy and petrology/petrophysics. Such categories are not my discipline of experience.

Experience
Four years in different services with additional case studies of Pakistan, China, Saudi Arabia and Netherlands offshore.

Organizations
dGB Earth Sciences, The Netherlands.

Education/Credentials
Master in Philosophy with specialization in reservoir characterization by using Sequence Stratigraphy. And master in Geophysics with a case study of Punjab Platform.

Geology - net pay and gross pay

Expert: Farrukh Qayyum - 6/14/2009

Question
i want to know what is the difference between net pay and
gross pay and net effective pay?

Answer
Hello Ibrahim,

I'm not a Petrophysicist to answer you precisely. These terms define the reservoir column. The gross pay thickness is the total thickness of HC bearing reservoir column that includes non-productive intervals also. The net pay is the net thickness of productive intervals of a reservoir determined from resistivity log (for instance). The gross pay accounts for thickness of shale breaks that is not the true pay thickness that's why net-to-gross ratio is estimated to define a productive part of a reservoir. I'm not sure about effective pay, I guess, it is synonymous to NTG ratio.

Hope this might helped you a bit.

Regards,
Farrukh
