Geology - rock or meteor

Expert: Fraser Hamilton - 6/22/2009

Question
i have a rock? i found hiking in the aj az desert and its black and looks melted its about half of a large pizza and 2 to 4 inches thick in places ,,parts of it a magnet sick to and parts it don't ,,15 lbs and i weighed a rock similar in weight from my yard and it only weighed 4 and a half lbs

Answer
Carla:
It looks like a piece of volcanic magma, but that would not make sense for where you found it, I think.  I would suggest that you get in touch with the geology dept of a local university.  Ask to speak to whomever teaches the petrology course.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.
Fraser
