Question Greetings from Malaysia!
Dear Mr. Hamilton. I am interested in pursuing my studies in USA; specializing in geothermal program. I have very little experience in geothermal study... Malaysia has yet to exploit its geothermal resource for power generation, and the subject is still not well discussed here...i am very optimistic that we here in Malaysia can have its first geothermal power plant in the near future, and i want to be among the first to discover and utilize the potential...regarding that, i will need to have the knowledge and gain the experience from leading countries that has been pioneering the area of interest and i see the USA as one of the best place for me to have that...could you please suggest which uni provides the best geothermal studies? I've done some research and found out about SMU and even had done some corresponding with the program coordinator, but i am a bit concerned about SMU since it is not a public univ(correct me if I'm mistaken)and i am not really financially-secured to further my studies in a private institutions. Please provide me some assistance and guidance. Thank you! :-)
Answer Greetings:
If your research indicates that SMU is indeed at the forefront of the technology, then you should pursue your contacts there. Private or public will not make any difference, being from overseas your rates will be similar at both. However, pursuing an MSc, your advisor or mentor should be able to help you secure funding in the form of research grants, assistantships, teaching monies, etc.
Find the best school (sorry I cannot help in that regard) and then the best person and find out if they have money to help.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Fraser
