Geology - continental separation

Expert: Fraser Hamilton - 7/2/2009

Question
Hello. Has the GPS system been accurate enough or operating long enough to measure how fast America is separating from Europe? If so, what is the result, and where can I find this type of information?

Answer
Glenn:
I believe that GPS is accurate enough to make the measurements you refer to, and I am sure it is being used for that purpose.  I am guessing if you search for the geological survey in Iceland you might find some of the data.
Hope this helps.
Fraser
