Geology - unknown rock

Expert: Dr D.Venkat Reddy - 7/11/2009

Question
I have a 14" almost perfectly round rock, found 500 feet underground in a mine.  I have been to local rock hound shops but they cannot determine what it is.

Answer
Dear Don
Rock ur collected at underground mine site appears to be weathered rock.Original rock under the process of weathering ,alteration and transporation reshaped into rounded to sub rounded. You can see clear marks on fracturing .This rock again will alters and fractures along the visible fracture.
However it is difficult to determine me rock type.It may be weathered granite. You can drop dil Hydrochloric acid-if it reacts it may be limestone/dolomite/marble.
U can remove weathered surface with hammer-it ooks like hard-it may belongs to Igneous rock type
