Geology/Coal as Source Rocks

Dear Sir,
Can You Tell Me In Detail About The Potential of Coal as a Source Rock For Crude Oil?What Kind Of Coal Is Considered As Source Rock?
Is There Anywhere Crude Oil Is Extracted From Oil on Commercial Basis?

The source of Coal is mainly plants etc, hence oil is not possible. You may be aware that the source rock for gas is Type III source material which it self results from plants. I am not aware if anywhere the oil is extracted from coal. But at the same time coal can not be a source of oil.

The carbonaceous matter is produced by the compaction and induration of altered plant remains—namely, peat deposits. Different varieties of coal arise because of differences in the kinds of plant material (coal type), degree of coalification (coal rank), and range of impurities (coal grade). Although most coals occur in stratified sedimentary deposits, the deposits may later be subjected to elevated temperatures and pressures caused by igneous intrusions or deformation during orogenesis (i.e., processes of mountain building), resulting in the development of anthracite and even graphite.  (Britannica Online Encyclopedia)

I am a petroleum exploration geologist with about 40+ years of diversified experience. I can answer questions on stratigraphy, log interpretation, field studies based on set of logs and core results, general geology etc. Can provide guidance for career planning in earth sciences. Can not help in questions about hard rocks, igneous petrology & mineralogy, sequence stratigraphy and seismic.
