Question
When S. America broke from Africa and moved westwards over Asthenosphere it must have faced resistance from Panthalasa floor which too is placed over asthenosphere. Without Panthalasa subducting beneath S. American plate at the time it broke, how could S. America at all move?

Answer
Dear Bhavnish,
Its a good question and I do not have any answer to it.
I think its analogous situation of the Indian plate colliding with the Asian/Euro-Asian plates etc. with the formation of Alpine-Himalayan Mountain systems.

In case of Americas, the Rocky-Andean mountain systems might be the analogs of collision tectonics.
thanks
