I found this today detecting out on a claim. Made the Gold Bug scream. It's a beast of a rock, 5.5oz. When I scratch the black surface off it appears silver. It is not magnetic. Is it silver? Palladium or Platinum would be much nicer

Answer
Hello Tlimes

Looks like a nice find - I cannot tell from the photo - maybe lead? If it is pure metal you can check the specific gravity against a table.

Another test would be checking its hardness as different minerals have different properties

I have to run now - let me know how you do.

Cheers
