Dear Rachael
Any rock can be identified with physical properties
Rock altered due to geological processes resulted under geological time deposited
Natural rock weathering results to loose the originality of rock
If u put small drops of diluted Hydrochloric acid if it gives effervescence rock may belong to carbonate deposit such as lime stone-marble
Test its hardness by rubbing -iron nail or copper coin or glass to see its harder or softer
U can get from web site for tips for identification of mineral or rock
