Geology/Regarding mountains

Question
Hi,

Do mountains in anyway contribute to the stability of the earth?

Regards.

Answer
I do not believe so. I have heard other questions of this nature, about whether mountains play some role in stabilizing the orbit of the earth. However if you look at the actual mass of the mountains on the surface, a topographic globe is good for this, you will see that they really amount to a very small fraction of the diameter of the earth and likewise its total mass.
