Question
Suppose you select a number in the interval from 1/2 to 3/4 and a number in the interval 3/4 to 1 1/4. What is the least and greatest sums there can be?

Answer
The least is found by choosing the least in each interval.
That is, take the 1st as ¼ and the 2nd as ¾, so the sum is ¼ + ¾ = 5/4 = 1¼.

The greatest is found by choosing the greatest in each interval.
That is, tke the 1st to be ¾ and the second to be 1¼ = 2.
