Question
Sir,

If I convert a time domain data to frequency domain data,I have met with some windows. may i know what is this window doing?.is this window can act as a low pass or band pass filter.how can i understand which window (Hann, rectangular, hamming, tukey, cosine, triangular)for filtering the seismic Data.

Answer
Dear Saji,

These windows are used to taper the extracted seismic data in a frequency domain. This is done because we assume that the extracted data could have an effect of windowing. So, we want to remove the side lobes. This is done in frequency domain based on a certain shape. A simplist tamper form is box-car. In which you may say that keep 10-80Hz and tappered the rest.

Other windows have their own shapes. But the ideas is the same.

Expertise

I would like to answer Geophysical questions with keen interest, specifically exploration related. I want to hear from users for their queries on exploration geophysics/geology. Especially in the discipline of Reservoir Characterization from seismic reflection data. The questions related to basics and interpretational applications would be most welcome. I can also answer queries related to sequence and/or seismic stratigraphy, geology, general geomorphology, seismic geomorphology and other relevant questions. I can not answer the questions related to gravity, magnetic, or resistivity surveying or question related to the fluid dynamics. Such categories are not related to my experience.
