Hi,
1.How to decide number of angle stacks and angle stack ranges?
2.Should there be any overlap between angle ranges?
3.How to QC angle stacks?
4.Does angle stacks require heavy conditioning like inverse Q,random noise attenuation,time variant scaling ?

Dear Krishna,

Here are the quick answers to your questions:

1- At first place, this varies with the depth of target interval. We can go normally up to 40-45 deg. of angle. However, you can choose a variation such that you create stacks after every 5-deg. In this way you will get 8-different stacks to analyze, which is more than enough to perform elastic wave analysis.

2- You can, but then it will be a matter of averaging. In geophysics, adding more complications in analysis will add more uncertainties/difficulties in interpretation. Simple way is the best way to go always before trying difficult one. I do not think that this will change most of your interpretation / quantitative analysis.

3- Do ray-tracing / forward modelling. The other QC is obviously to create residuals between a sum of all stacks to the full stack. The latter is normally an old-fashioned practice.

4- People avoid doing over-filtering on angle stacks. Q-compensation could be an optimum choice than time-variant scaling.
