AboutShawntiah Jones Expertise I have great knowledge in many small and furry animals such as hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, chinchillas, guinea pigs, rabbits and ferrets. I have taken care all of these animals and have great knowledge in appropiate cage sizes as well as food and health.
Experience I no longer work at pet store. because I am now working at a hospital, but I worked in the petcare department for a year and was the petcare lead of my department. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun. I also own many types of animals.
Question Hello there I have a 2 month syrian hamster.
1.I think my hammy is getting chubby, dunno if she is just growing up but I do think she is fatter (she is not pregnant) Im giving her 1 1/2 tablespoons a day and get her in her sphere half an hour a day, is that ok? What´s the ideal quantity to feed a hamster and to let them run in the sphere?
2. She loves gnawing her wire cage, (can´t find the magic in that) but when she´s awake if I don't get her out of the cage all she´ll do is gnaw de wires in her favorite corner... I brought her a gnawing banana wood toy for she to gnaw but she still prefers the wires.
Nothing to do with hamsters... now and then
3. what best as a pet, a ferret or a guinea pig?
4. I love ferrets, but never have had or touched one.. any feeling you´d like to share about having one?
Answer Hello Sophie,
typically most people do free feed their hamsters or fill their bowls up half way each day. Hamsters do get pretty chubby which is fine and exercise 30min. in the sphere is the max I would keep a hamster in the sphere so they don't overheat. As far as the cage chewing goes, I have found that many hamsters don't like to chew on wood, they prefer to chew on hamster treats like granola bars, or shred-a-box which was my hamster's favorite chew treat. My hamster wouldn't eat wood treats, so I had to find what worked best for him.
Also about other pets, I much rather have a guinea pig over a ferret. Ferrets are not great pets for people who don't know anything about them. Ferrets are some of the worst biters I've dealt with and they bite and don't let go. Typically at pet stores they don't like you touching them due to injuries and the fact that they will bite.
