Gerbils & Hamsters - Questions about hamster combinations

Question
I previously owned 2 female teddy bear hamsters, which lived to be about 4 years old.  They lived together and got along great. I am now looking to adopt 2 more hamsters.  This time I went on the Internet to find out information and read, in almost ever article, that when two teddy bear hamsters are put into the same cage they fight with each other.  I would like to know if this is true or false.  If it is false, were my two hamsters, an exception to the rule or was it because they were sisters?  Can a teddy bear and a black bear hamster live in the same cage?

Answer
It's true, they should not live together. Your hamsters are the exception, not the rule. Sometimes they leave each other alone, but most Syrian hamsters will have territory issues and fight each other, regardless of relationship. They could live in harmony for a long time and one day you can come home and find one dead. It's not a risk worth taking, 2 hamsters need 2 separate tanks.

A teddy bear is simply a long haired Syrian, and a black bear is a black colored syrian. They can mate but don't house them together for the reasons I've already explained.
