Gerbils & Hamsters - My hamster gave birth

Expert: Heather S - 6/29/2009

Question
My hamster gave birth to six four days ago, but one didn't make it through the night, so cream(mother) ate it. But the other five are active and very healthy. I keep getting scared when i hear long, loud squeaks  and i keep thinking cream is eating them. Also, i want to know if i can touch cream, not the babies. Will my scent get onto cream and then the babies? And then will she eat them? I've had cream and sonic(father) for about 5-6 months, but I'm not sure if cream knows my scent well enough. Please answer, I've saw your other answers and i feel your the best on the Internet :)

Answer
Hehe, Cream and Sonic, that's a cute reference. Anyway I wouldn't touch her, or anything in the cage including changing her litter until the pups are 2 weeks old. Any disturbance might cause her to eat her babies. Usually at 2 weeks old the chances of her eating them are much less.
