Gerbils & Hamsters - teddy bear hamster itching

Expert: Heather S - 6/21/2009

Question
ok i just got my teddy bear hamster yesterday and all she is doing is itching herself in her privates and around her ears she lets us hold her and does everything normally so what's wrong?

Answer
Are you sure she's itching? What many owners think is excessive itching is just normal grooming. Watch the hamster carefully. If she's bringing the paw to her mouth at all during the process, even for a second, she's just grooming. Syrian hamsters are very tidy little animals and love grooming themselves. They wet their paws to wash their face, and wet their back paws to wipe clean their back and sides.
