Gerbils & Hamsters - Babies

Expert: Heather S - 8/25/2009

Question
Dear Heather S,

I have a few questions. 1. My Syrian hamster had babies and they are currently 25 days old. They constantly fight with the mom. The mom is very sweet too, but very aggressive when the babies get her mad. Is that normal, should I separate them early? They are all weaned. 2. I have a wire cage. The babies climb the cage to the top and fall. Then they keep doing it. Sometimes they will jump on the wheel while the mom is running and slide off. Is it a game to them? I am worried if they take a hard fall if it will damage their brain or their body. Thanks for your help!

Sincerely, Jenna

Answer
25 days is pretty close to the 28 recommended separation day, so if there's aggression it's perfectly fine to separate them a little early. Boys and girls should be separated into like gender tanks, and by 2 months every single hamster should have a separate tank.
