Question
Hi,I am early fifties.
After experiancing a lot of discomfort(gas, bloating) from a small bowl of ice cream before bed,I decided to try an experiment and cut out all dairy.
Lo and behold,my usual state of always feeling bloated and 'windy' has gone, and my waistline that always refused to shrink(despite not eating a lot and jogging) has actually gone down.
It took over  fifty years but I think a lightbulb has gone on!
I was not a huge dairy consumer, but I did put lots of milk in my coffee and tea,and liked to snack on cheese.
I remember my Mom saying as a baby I was colicky with a big belly on a small skinny frame-she fed me lots of milk as a kid because it was the thing to do.I always had gas and was a fat kid.
Your thoughts and advice appreciated.

Answer
Hi Bud and thanks for writing,

I'm SO glad you discovered your obvious food allergy - sadly too many people walk thought life with severe food allergies/intolerances and never even know.

Milk - One of the nine most common food allergens: When someone has a milk allergy his/her immune system has an abnormal reaction to milk proteins, which may be life-threatening. When a person is lactose intolerant, his/her body does not have enough of the enzyme lactase, needed by the digestive system, to break down the milk sugar lactose. Symptoms of lactose intolerance include abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhea after milk ingestion. Lactose intolerance is not an allergy.

Some people even believe: The Biggest problem with cow’s milk is that the protein in the cow’s milk damages the human immune system. Amino acids, the units that make up proteins, are building blocks for all living cells. When amino acids in our food are properly broken down by the digestive system into protein, it does no harm to the immune system. Protein from milk, however, is absorbed into the blood fully indigested, provoking an immune response. Repeated exposure to these proteins disrupts normal immune functions and may eventually lead to diseases.

I'm glad you're feeling better, I'd stay away from the dairy products but be sure to get your calcium from other healthy sources like beans, cereal, OJ, Tofu, etc ...

Wishing you continued good health,
Margot
