Question
My 70-year-old brother has suffered from acid stomach for many years but has grown much worse lately. He had tests done in his small town in upper Michigan which show his esophagus inflamed and told he was in a "pre-cancerous state. I've searched online to find a good doctor for this condition, read some bad reviews and asked for $29 for further reviews - which I would gladly pay but I feel I just cannot trust that method. I know nurses are really good persons to contact as to which doctor to see. I feel so bad for him as he is the salt of the earth - plus I had my first experience with acid reflux awhile ago after too much spaghetti and a sour wine. The burning pain rising up into my throat was miserable and I realized how he and other sufferers often feel this. Should we contact hospitals like Ann Arbor's and ask to speak to a nurse in gastroenterology? Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
    Madeline Steeg

Answer
Hi Madeline and thanks for writing,

I agree that nurses are a great resource for hearing who’s good and who to avoid, but I’m not sure if you could get an honest answer by phoning the hospital (they may be reluctant to talk at work), but it’s worth a try I suppose.  Just be careful how you word the question and be really polite and maybe you’ll reach a sympathetic ear.  You might also want to try reaching the head nurse on the unit as opposed to just asking whoever answers; the head nurse should know all the surgeons quite well and usually are happy to help.

Wishing you all the best,
Margot
