Question
I'm a 56 yr old female that is having tia's , I am extremely
allergic to aspirin. I am on disability to the cost of drugs is paramount, this drug is on the Wal-Mart $4 list. What I want to know is it aspirin based?

Answer
Hi Gail,

As with any prescription medication, you need to consult with a certified pharmacist before taking it, but from my research it looks like Coumadin and Aspirin ar not chemically similar (remembering that I am NOT a Chemist or a Pharmacist so this is layman’s advice, not professional).

According to Drugs.com:

Coumadin (crystalline warfarin sodium) is an anticoagulant which acts by inhibiting vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors. Chemically, it is 3-(α-acetonylbenzyl)-4-hydroxycoumarin and is a racemic mixture of the R- and S-enantiomers. Crystalline warfarin sodium is an isopropanol clathrate. The crystallization of warfarin sodium virtually eliminates trace impurities present in amorphous warfarin. Its empirical formula is C19H15NaO4.

Acetylsalicylic Acid, also known by trade name Aspirin, is an acetyl derivative of salicylic acid. Acetylsalicylic Acid’s Chemical Formula: C6H4(OCOCH3)CO2H, Synonym 2-acetoxybenzoic acid

I hope this answered you question.
