Geriatric Medicine - my mother is demented and paranoic

Expert: Margot RN BScN GNC - 10/19/2009

Question
Hi. My mother is 79 y.o,  she was born in russia, the last 6 yrs she lives in Boston, because we live just an hour and a half away and most of her neighbors are from russia.
I'm her only daughter. My father has advanced
alzhaimer and resides in a nursing home close to my mom's.
my mother had always been suspicious , but never schizophrenic. Now she is blaming me and other people around her for stealing from her- stealing her CD's, her clothes. I'm her health care proxy, and I can see that she is demented and paraniod- but what can I do? How can i help? in the rare cases than she goes to the doctor she behaves good enough, and nobody
except me, my son and her closest friend and neighbor know what's going on...

Answer
Hi Alla,

It is a difficult situation but I would contact the health authority in her area, I would suggest either the “Department of Mental Health” or the “Department of Elder Affairs” which can be reached through the “Office of Health Services” of the “Executive Office of Health and Human Services for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts” – local contact numbers can be found at http://www.mass.gov

I would ask for a an assessment and tell them that she covers and presents well but has paranoid delusions and for that reason you feel she is not safe at home alone without some support and regular assessments.  This should at least get her “in the system” and giver her a Case Manager who you can stay in touch with and alert to concerns as they arise.

I hope this answers your question and I wish you both all the best,
Margot
