Question My mother started seeing her current family practice doctor eight years ago. My mother was in excellent health. She walked three miles a day, watched her diet and has no history of smoking or drinking alcohol, yet she is taking twelve meds now. I asked for a reduction of those meds since my mother now has mild dementia. The doctor refuses to reduce the amount of meds. Can a geriatric specialist better fit the needs of my mother's current status?
Answer Hi Nancy and thanks for writing,
I'm a big believer in Geriatric Specialists including Gerontologists and Geriatric Pharmacists; I also always believe the fewer medications the better.
I would find out if there is a Gerontologist i your area and how you could arrange an appointment for a review - also phone around and see if there is a Geriatric Pharmacist you might consult.
At the very least, make an appointment with a good Pharmacist, bring a list of your Mom's meds and ask what each one is, what it's for and whether it is absolutely necessary.
I hope this helps and I hope you get your Mom off at least half her meds. I know Western physicians don't like this suggestion, but natural supplements an safely an effectively replace many prescription medications.
