German Language - furstein, feuerstein, von stein?

Expert: Kurt Bamert - 7/17/2008

Question
Hi, I was wondering if you could help me with the translation of furstein or
feuerstein, or maybe even von stein? I am not sure how it is spelled or if it is
two separate words. My grandmother has told me more than once that her
family came from Germany. I find it hard to believe since her maiden name is
"de la Pena," however she has said that when the family came to Mexico from
Germany, they translated their last name because people could not
pronounce it. Everything else she has told me about the family has ended up
being true so I'm trying to see if the two names could have the same
meaning. Thank you

Answer
Hello
"Feuerstein" means "stone for making fire" "piedra para hacer fuego" a second possible translation would be "stone of fire" "piedra de fuego" which would mean a "stone made of fire, consisting of fire" "una piedra que cosiste de fuego" "una piedra donde hay fuego dentro."
Saludos
Greetings,
Kurt
