Dear Kurt,

In a German programme I watched recently, some boys were discussing racing their buggies. The conversation went like this:

Wieviel Meter?
Außen rum?
Etwa 500.

Later on in the same programme, someone said, “Fahr am besten außen rum.”

Please, what does “außen rum” mean?

Hello
It may mean that you drive along the outside board (margin) of a circuit. The contrary would be to drive along the inside board (margin) of the circuit.

"aussen herum" rum=herum

3. rum <Adv.>: ugs. kurz für →herum.

Another possibility is that you have two possibilities of a circuit, for example you can race along a road that is surrounding a wood or a city or you can take the way or road that goes through a wood or a city.

Another exampale is that the circuit is marked by poles. One possibility is that you race on the exterior of the poles or that you race on the inside of the poles.
