Question My mom received a letter from a German courthouse stating that one of her brothers died and she is to accept or deny the inheritance. What does that involve? If he had outstanding debts, does that mean she would be responsible for those debts if she accepts the inheritance? Is there any way to find out if there truly is anything to be inherited? My mom had not seen her brother in 30 years. Thank you.
Answer Dear Cathy,
Your mother has one month to refuse the inheritance in writing at the court. Otherwise she is responsible for possible debts. I would be glad to contact the court to find out if they know anything further about the inheritance. Are there any other surving relatives in Germany or is there a executor of a will?
