German Law/Kindergeld

Question
I am both a U.S. citizen and a German citizen. I lived in Germany for three years from the age of 15 to 18. My mother collected our Kindergeld while we lived with her. I have since moved back to the U.S. to go to college and I my question is, can I start getting my Kindergeld after I enroll in school? I have heard that you can collect Kindergeld until the age of 24 or 26, if you are enrolled in school, but can I still receive it if I am going to college in another country?

Answer
Nicole: thanks for the question. Am I correct to assume that your mother still resides in Germany (and that your father lives in the US)? If so, your mother may in fact be entitled to receive Kindergeld from the German government if she claims you as a dependent. Please e-mail me directly (csb@germanlegalservices.com) with more details so I can help you further. Carolin
