Question
hello

i am planning a trip to munich in early july.  what would be some interesting not-so-touristy place that i can drive to see.  i will have a car for about a week.

thank you

Answer
Hello Phil

One cannot avoid tourists in Bavaria in summer, foreigners as well as northerners also invade the place, like Florida or the French Riviera!

The smaller cities and towns are quieter that the "highlights". here is a list of my favorite quiet and romantic towns. They all have old village-type pedestrian zones, original architecture, cozy small inns. There are beautiful country roads to these and between them:

Freising
Landshut
Wasserburg
Bad Reichenhall
Reit im Winkel
Kufstein (Austria)
Bad Tölz
Isny
Landsberg am Lech
Fürstenfeldbruck
Pilsen (Czech Republic)

Within Munich the Isar River both north (to Garching) and south (to Wolfrathausen and beyond) of the city is wonderful to explore, both sides of the river, take regular short turn offs to the river bank. All state property, no private property, there are lovely quiet walks and cycle tracks parallel to the river on both sides.

There are many beautiful lakes south of the city and in the nearby Alps. Driving the small curvy roads to those is my best choice when 'getting out of the city'. Get a good roadmap that shows scenic routes with a green stripe or green dots, panoramic lookout points with red rays, points of interest with symbols.

You may consider some tourist places too if they are on your way. To avoid crowds start early in the morning, dawn from 5am or enjoy them in the evening, dusk till 10pm! I have listed those at: http://www.listsofbests.com/list/15412

Please let me know your age-group, what you are particularly interested in, your hobbies/sport and general budget per day. I can then refine your request.

Note: I created a new topic "Bavaria" under German Culture specially for questions like this. Will be pleased to answer any questions there too.

Regards
Rudi
