Subject: Plants & Animals of Germany

Question
What are some of the major plants and animals of Germany. Please write an answer soon t my email.

Answer
There is no specific plants or animals unique to Germany. Common European wild animals include deer, bears, foxes, salmon, falcons... Plants: pine trees, birch, oak, daisies, mushrooms...
Pets: Horses, Alsatian (German Shepherd), Rottweiler, Daschund, rabbits,  hedgehogs, rodents, doves...

Germany is a small "political" part of Europe and most fauna and flora is common across the whole continent. The country is divided into 3 regions; coastal, mid-land and alpine. These regions expand over borders so that Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France and the Benelux countries have basically the same native plants and animals.

I find no basic list for Germany, neither Europe! Perhaps your search should be more defined for:
fish
amphibians
insects
mammals
birds
Perhaps the experts at our wildlife department have such lists:

The following parks in Germany are kept free of alien plants and animals (as far as possible). See examples and images at:
Nationalpark Bayrischer Wald: http://www.nationalpark-bayerischer-wald.de/
Tierpark Dessau (excuse the ostrich!): http://www.tierpark.dessau.de/content/index.php

An interesting article on imported animals endangering native spieces. Aliens change the food cycle and often interbreed to result in 'mongrel' and 'bastard' offspring. The article is German but you may use a translation tool like Altavista 'Babel Fish' to translate the page.

A list of extinct European animals (and some rediscovered!)

I answered a similar question recently:
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Germany-141/2008/2/Wildlife-Germany.htm
Quote from that answer:
Hedgehogs, we call 'Igel', are very common in most the worlds temperate regions and very common in Germany too... Groundhogs, we call 'Murmeltier', are common... Squirrels, we call 'Eichhörnchen', are the most common wild animals in Germany... a rare mini-squirrel looks almost like a mouse called 'Siebenschläfer', http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siebenschläfer
For protected species see:
http://www.deutschewildtierstiftung.de/projekte/index.php
Of all pets in Germany, dogs are the most popular, including national breeds like the 'German Shepherd' or 'Rottweiler' ...
There is a mysterious wild animal some report seeing in dark and deep forests called a 'Woiperdinger' but nobody has ever captured one ;-)

....

Rudi
