About James Derheim
Expertise
I live part of the year in Rothenburg ob der Tauber and so know a great deal about this town. I can also help with questions about the Rhein River Valley, Neckar River Valley, Mosel area, Erzgebirge, Bamberg area, Black Forest and more. Because of time constraints, I will not help you plan your entire travel itinerary.

Experience
I have lived and worked in Europe since 1989, homebased in Germany. I own and operate "European Focus Private Tours," which since 1995 has helped more than 450 people get the most out of their trips to Europe.

Question
Hi James, we have heard that there is a Herman Hesse museum in the Black Forest but cant find any references to this...we love his writing and would like to visit when we are in Germany next month. Also, we are 2 Kiwis in a small van we sleep in on our travels...toilet etc...not a campervan...do you think we could sleep overnight in town carparks or quiet streets...have done so in France and Italy with no trouble? Thanks

Answer
Hi John,

The museum you asked about is in the small town of Calw, in the northern Black Forest. Open every day except Monday from 11 to 5.

As far as sleeping in your van, this probably would not fly in Germany, where they are more careful about security. Possibly would work if you were on the edge of a small village but I don't know, cannot recommend it.

There are youth hostels all over Germany and you do not have to be young to stay in them. Just let your fingers do the walking on Google and you will probably find one close to the places you want to visit.

Have a good trip,
James Derheim
