Question
Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to read and hopefully help with my question!
I am hoping to move to Bavaria for a year around september, i am going with a german speaker but do not myself speak german, i was wondering what employment oppourtunities are like for english speakers in Bayreuth? And if you could give me any guidance on where and how i can go about looking for jobs?
Thank you again for your time x

Answer
Hi Tom

English is a second language in cities of Bavaria, one will find it difficult to get a job without English. German is easy to learn "hands on". Learn as much as you can before arriving through on-line "talking" dictionaries" or cassette tapes. If asked what your German is like, say "sehr gut" (very good) regardless of stuttering or learning it later.

Unemployment is relatively high in all of Europe at the moment so patience and a lot of effort will be needed. Perhaps a bit of flexibility too. If you are in a professional field it can take months to find a job and if you are flexible there are a lot of jobs in catering and cleaning available immediately.

In Munich we have www.munichfound.com and www.gea.de to help english speakers. When getting to Bayeruth see if there is a similar English club or pub to get to know people. Only 10% of jobs are secured by posting CV's. Your chance is better through contacts or asking directly in person. Remember, good clothing specially shoes are important when being interviewed.

Some companies do not employ personnel without German language because the many safety rules are in German.

Note, when getting to Bayreuth you will first need an "Aufenthaltserlaubnis" (resident permit) and "Arbeitserlaubnis" (work permit), both of which are easy to get and just a formality if you are an EU citizen.

Regards
Rudi
