AboutKevin Johnson Expertise I lived in Germany my whole life. Since I have strong ties to the United States and an active interest in American life, I know the fine differences between the two nations.
Question Hello! :) I have read the other questions that you have answered, and I see that they are really helpful. I would like to know how the climate in Germany affects their way of life. I have seen from research that the weather doesn't seem to have any effect on how they live. Germans live a lot like people in the United States, and don't really seem to have a distinguishing lifestyle. I hope that you can help me identify these effects. Thank you!
Answer Hello Anna,
Germany is part of Western Europe and as such benefits from the Gulf Stream that brings warm water from the tropical regions of the Gulf of Mexico to the western Atlantic coast of Europe. This gives us relatively mild winters and moderately warm summers. We have no "extreme" climatic conditions that would seriously influence our lifestyle.
One observation:
We do get some snow in the winter, so most roofs have to be built to sustain the weight of some snow. The roofs of houses are either slanted (so that large snow build-ups can slide off) or reinforced to provide extra stability to carry additional weight.
(Note: In the mediterranean regions (e.g. Italy or Greece) houses usually have non-reinforced flat roofs)
We do have seasonal variations that make some sports seasonal activities: e.g. outdoor swimming is only enjoyable in the summer, skiinng is only possible in the winter.
