my son is in the Canadian army and has been posted there. i want to send them gift cards to purchase items in germany or food etc

Gift cards are called "Gutscheine" so you can add that word to a German store and get results when yahuugling. The stores can send the card direct to your son. If you have problems with German then call them, their service hotlines speak English too. Examples:

Galeria Kaufhof is possibly the best store for general gifts and everything!
