About Carol Bainbridge
Expertise
I can answer most questions on parenting gifted children, from infants on. Questions can be about parenting, advocacy, and support and I can provide suggestions for toys and books gifted children love. I can even help you determine whether your child is gifted or bright, and I can point you to more information you might need. I can answer some questions about programs for gifted children, but can`t help much with information on colleges. Visitors wanting to know if their children are gifted might want to read the article "Is My Child Gifted?" before asking a question.

Experience
I am the parent of a gifted child and have been working with other parents of gifted children for 13 years, helping them find support and providing them with information. I founded a local gifted organization and helped organize a parent day for a national gifted conference. I have been an active member of my state's gifted association since 1999 and created and maintain their Web site. In addition, I have created a website for parents of gifted children who are looking for toys and books for their children: www.giftsforlearning.com. I am also the Guide About.com Gifted Children Site.

Organizations
National Association for Gifted Children. Board member of state gifted association.

Question
Dear Sir,
We are Indian, live in Thailand for 12yrs. My husband is a software engineer (a genius I've ever see) and I'm graduated in Mathematics do help him in our Computer shop. My husband's bloodgroup is B+ve and mine is AB-ve. We have 2 sons. Our first son is a very bright student and talented in music and computers yet he doesn't show interest or responsibility to study anything. He is 11yrs. old, hyper active and studying in Grade:7(one year advance). He started talking very fluently in early stage and learned things quickly. We don't need to teach him in his interested things like computer games or reading. He knows by himself on his interests. But he is having Heamophilia A (2.8% of FactorVII). Me and my husband or our family doesn't have Heamophilia. Doctor in Thailand says that he can be a mutant child. Also he is a little genius like his dad.
Our second son will turn to be 4 in the 28th August. He is totally opposite from his elder brother. He has a speech delay, talks a lot without any language from 1yr to 3yrs. He likes sport very much even can climb on a door.Never sits for long time. He likes friends and people, has eye contact. So picky in food. When he was 3, I put him in a school. After that he started to talk word by word. Yet cannot speak faster. If we teach him something he'll learn it and has memory. When he was 2 yrs. His brother shouted at him and got Breathholding spell, happened 3-4 times when he insists something. Now he is not having that but when he insists, he cannot control himself his anger, if its very hot or very late night. He starts to throw things and bite us and run away from home. This happened 2 times. Still he is having difficulty to talk. But talks many words and few sentences like what's that? what happened?,etc. When he was in my stomach, Dr. checked his blood and my placenta for to know he is heamophilic. And the result was he is not heamophilic. But what are these symptoms? Is he also a mutant? He behaves very lovely to all people and family when he is happy. All our neighbours and village love him very much because of his social interaction. We spent already 10,000 Bhat just for 2 visits to DR. So we stopped going cause of expense. Our first son also need a lot of money for his medication. Children are A-ve
Just want to know your opinion.
Thank you
sincerely yours
Bindu

Answer
Hi Bindu,

I don't know a great deal about hemophilia, but I do know that the form you mentioned does occur quite rarely.  I'm not sure I would call it a mutation any more than I would call any other kind of deficiency a mutation and I certainly wouldn't call a child with any kind of deficiency a mutant.

It sounds to me like your children, both of them, are gifted.  Not all gifted children are alike so it's not surprising that they are different from one another.  I can't say much specifically about your younger son's speech development since I don't have enough details, but I can say that it is not unusual for gifted kids to be late talkers.  Many are early talkers, but quite a few are late talkers.  Usually, however, once they start talking, they start talking in complete sentences.  I've known gifted kids to not talk until they were three and even later.  My own father did not start talking until he was five.

Here are some other signs of giftedness: Picky eating, good memory, lots of energy, good interpersonal skills (mostly with intellectual peers). and most important for you, intense emotions.  Gifted kids tend to have one are called "supersensitivities."  You can read about those here:
http://giftedkids.about.com/od/gifted101/a/overexcite.htm  That article has links to article about the specific sensitivities; you definitely want to read the one on emotional sensitivities.

Here is another article you might want to read is this one:

Helping Gifted Children Cope with Intense Emotions
http://giftedkids.about.com/od/socialemotionalissues/qt/emotion_coping.htm

Don't worry about your son being some kind of mutant; he's not.  Gifted kids are a handful to raise.  They are both a source of joy and of frustration.

I  hope that helped!
