About Carol Bainbridge
Expertise
I can answer most questions on parenting gifted children, from infants on. Questions can be about parenting, advocacy, and support and I can provide suggestions for toys and books gifted children love. I can even help you determine whether your child is gifted or bright, and I can point you to more information you might need. I can answer some questions about programs for gifted children, but can`t help much with information on colleges. Visitors wanting to know if their children are gifted might want to read the article "Is My Child Gifted?" before asking a question.

Experience
I am the parent of a gifted child and have been working with other parents of gifted children for 13 years, helping them find support and providing them with information. I founded a local gifted organization and helped organize a parent day for a national gifted conference. I have been an active member of my state's gifted association since 1999 and created and maintain their Web site. In addition, I have created a website for parents of gifted children who are looking for toys and books for their children: www.giftsforlearning.com. I am also the Guide About.com Gifted Children Site.

Organizations
National Association for Gifted Children. Board member of state gifted association.

Question
I need to have my son in therapy to help him deal with his differences.  Are there any   group therapy sessions that exist for gifted children that you know of in New York? How do I find a therapist that is in tune with the unique needs of the highly able child?.
Thank You
Cathy Babinski

Answer
Hi Cathy,

It's not unusual for gifted kids to need counseling at some point to help them with the various issues that arise from giftedness.

I'm sorry to say, though, that I'm not familiar with what New York may or may not have to offer.  Are you in New York City or another part of the state?

If you're in the city, you could try calling Stuyvesant High School.  You can find information about the school, including their phone number on their Web site (http://www.stuy.edu/).  While the school isn't exactly a school for gifted kids, it is a competitive science and math school, which means that it's full of gifted kids.  They may know of counseling resources for gifted kids in New York.

Another way to find a psychologist who understands gifted kids is to follow the same strategies one might use to find someone to get a gifted child tested.  YOu can read those suggestions here:

http://giftedkids.about.com/od/testing/ht/find_tester.htm

You may have to adapt the suggestions a bit to fit the different goals you have, but it you might have some success finding a therapist that way.

Good luck.
