My 4 year old son just went through the same thing. He cried very badly about how he didn't want to die or want us to die and leave him. We dealt with it by listening to his fears about dying and talking him through them as they came up. Answer all his questions as honestly as you can, but word it so that he understands and doesn't become more upset. Most of all, hug and kiss him alot. I took my son about a month to stop worrying about it. It's been a few months now and he doesn't talk about it anymore at all.

My daughter is 5 and has been very worried about dying, and me dying on and off for several months.  It is very distressing, as she asks me to promise that I wont die.  Obviously I can't make a promise like that, so I explain I love her very very much and am not planning to die, and am looking after myself so I last for a long long time.  I reinforce that she will hopefully also live until she is a very old lady.  My other 2 children have never had this fear, so I didn't know how to deal with it.  She is also very bright, doing the year ahead at school.

My daughter is currently doing the same thing. She will be 4 in March. She has been asking my husband and I the last 2 weeks, every night, "Please don't close your eyes. I don't want you to die" Every single night and asking my husband to "Please be careful and don't close your eyes" . It has completely freaked me out since she is always pretty bubbly and upbeat.  I remain calm and tell her I feel bad she feels that way but were not going anywhere.

major changes in her life right now so I am pretty sure it's about something she saw on TV.

Expertise

I can answer most questions on parenting gifted children, from infants on. Questions can be about parenting, advocacy, and support and I can provide suggestions for toys and books gifted children love. I can even help you determine whether your child is gifted or bright, and I can point you to more information you might need. I can answer some questions about programs for gifted children, but can`t help much with information on colleges. Visitors wanting to know if their children are gifted might want to read the article "Is My Child Gifted?" before asking a question.

Experience

I am the parent of a gifted child and have been working with other parents of gifted children for 13 years, helping them find support and providing them with information. I founded a local gifted organization and helped organize a parent day for a national gifted conference. I have been an active member of my state's gifted association since 1999 and created and maintain their Web site. In addition, I have created a website for parents of gifted children who are looking for toys and books for their children: www.giftsforlearning.com. I am also the Guide About.com Gifted Children Site.

Education/Credentials
I have a bachelor's degree in psychology, an MA in English, and completing a PhD in linguistics with a focus on verbally gifted children. I have been helping parents of gifted children for nearly 20 years and am currently the guide to gifted children on About.com
