Expert: goatlady Date: 7/5/2008 Subject: 4 wk old kid with mange
Question I have a 4 wk old Nigerian Dwarf kid that is being bottle fed. She developed ear mange. Vet had me shampoo her and dip her with Amatraz which nearly killed her. It took an emergency night visit from another Vet to reservse the effects of this "poisoning". He said that an injection of Ivermectin should do the trick. But, he couldn't remember the dosage off the top of his head. He was going out of town for four days and I did not want to let this go much longer. My question is the dosage for a 3lb kid. Do you know?
Answer Hi Carla,
I am SO sorry for your mishap- 4 weeks old is awfully young to have such a scare. Let me make sure I am reading this right- your 4 week old Nigerian is only 3 lbs in body weight - are You SURE? A newborn weight yes, but a 4 week old? I hope I am reading this wrong. In Any case, the dosage for injectable Ivomec is 1cc/40lbs or you could use the Ivomec Pour on dabbed on with a cotton ball,
(The typical dosage for ivomec pour on is 1cc/25lbs dribbled along the back line of the adult goat from neck to tail- trying to make the dosage last the entire way- dribble a bit with a syringe with no needle, dribble move a couple inches dribble move dribble move etc until you reach the tail head.)
BUT for a tiny kid, I use a cotton ball and rub on the skin on the back BUT since you already had an incident with the mitaban (Amatraz), I think I would be very careful here.
let me ask you.. was the mange actually diagnosed by a vet or how is it that you came to this conclusion of it being Psoroptic ear mite (mange)?
The correct dosage for ivomec injectable for a 3lb goat would be less than one eighth of a cc, injected SubQ. You will have to use a 1cc diabetic syringe to measure this small amount. Gosh Carla are you SURE she only weighs 3 lbs?
Let me know about her weight and how you decide to treat-
