Subject: baby goat sick again

Question
I wrote to you about three-four weeks ago. My baby than about 5 weeks old I was told had pnemonia and had a fever. The vet gave him a shot for the fever and cough. Well here we are about four weeks later and now I am told he has coccidiosis and was put on a pill form of something called SMZ 960. That was four days ago. Well now I just came back from the vet and he told me to stop the SMZ because now he has a fever about 103.5-104.3 and his lungs sounded horrible again. Not much coughing. So now he is on something called NORFLOR one shot a day for four days.
He was wormed with ivermec 1% injectable but I did it orally. He  has lost weight in four days time, I am giving him pedilyte and cow milk. He is in the house due to the cool damp nights here. What do you think it sounds like is going on here with my baby. ??

Answer
HI Tabby,
SMZ960 is an antibiotic usually used for digestive  or upper respiratory- Also used For scours (what they call diarrhea in goats) Nuflor is also an antibiotic- both are vet prescription most commonly used for  pneumonia. I would get some coccidiosis medicine from the feed store or order online from Jeffers or Valley Vet supply-

When you dewormed him with the Ivomec, Did you follow the 10 day 10 day 10 day routine? I would RE-deworm him and inject it SubQ at the rate of 1cc/30lbs and use Ivomec PLUS for  liver fluke as well as gastro- intestinal worms. Read my article on deworming on my website:

http://Goat-Link.com Look in the parasite Menu for the top article called Goat Deworming Info, this gives a complete explanation of this deworming procedure.

I Would also treat him for cocci using Sulmet or DiMehtox liquid directly from the bottle not in the drinking water- do NOT use Corid as this is a thiamine inhibitor. The dosage for both Sulmet and Dimethox liquid is 6TBSP per 100 lbs the first day and 3TBSP /100lbs the next 4 days given orally right  from the bottle. (1TBSP is 15ccs)

The Nuflor should help the pneumonia- I use Tyaln200 over the counter not vet prescription for pneumonia because I think it works better- it stings like crazy but works very well-  you may suggest it to the vet? The dosage I use is 1cc/25lbs injected SubQ twice a day.

Once the immune system is compromised, they seems to be subject to anything and a baby goat doesn't have a good immune system anyway until it is around 2-3 months old.

Let me know how he does. BTW Inject the Ivomec, don't give it orally - explained in my goat deworming article as to why..
