Goats - baby goat diaria

Expert: Goatlady - 9/6/2008

Question
my baby goat has been having diaria. When we got him they didn give us him mom.  so we fed him normal milk from a store wih a bit of water added into it. A bit after we got him he started having diaria. it is on and odd. We are not sure how old he is... but pretty young. he drinks milk but other than that he eats grass, alphalpha hay and goat grain once in a while. we live in Canada. Coquitla. We feed him 3 times a day, 1 and a half every time. Other than that he plays.. he is happy and all. oh yes...he might sometimes fall asleep while standing. Is that normal?
thank you.

Answer
HI Mansoor,
Not knowing the baby's age  makes this a bit more difficult - but assuming it is at least a month old, has he been dewormed? Treated for coccidiosis?  If you have a vet who can do a fecal exam this is the best thing to see if the baby has internal parasites which cause scouring (sloppy poops) You mention feeding him 3 times a day one and a half- one and a half what? I have limited symptoms here but I will send you a few articles to read and you can let me know if any of these sounds to you  like what you are dealing with and seeing first hand. You will also need to take the goat's rectal temperature with a digital thermometer- normal is 101.5 to 103.5. Sometimes a goat will stand and waver and then go to sleep although normally the night time sleep is done lying down
