Goats/Acorns

Question
Can you tell me if white oak acorns are poisoness to goats.  These are the large acorns and we have tons of them and were picking them up to save for the winter for my goats.

Answer
They can be poisonous--more often when they are green. Goats can detoxify the tannic acid better than other animals. I would be cautious about feeding them to goats. Here is a link that is mainly about cattle but mentions poisoning in goats. http://texnat.tamu.edu/cmplants/toxic/Acrobat/Oak.pdf
