Goats/baby goat eye

Question
We have a baby goat that's about 3 weeks old. His eye is closed and the hair is gone aroun both eyes and redkcu7e

Answer
Is there any inflammation seen when you open the eyelids? Is there any discharge around the eyes?  Two items are most likely happening.  One is that he has an eye infection - for this would treat with NFZ puffer (many feed/farm stores carry this now) - this is an antibiotic powder which is puffed at the eye upon opening the eyelids - twice a day for 5 to 7 days.  Would wipe off any discharge seen around the eye with a moist soft cloth/tissue.  Re the loss of hair around both eyes, that is usually from selenium deficiency - would give two 200 mcg selenium tablets (this is human kind and available over the counter at most drug stores or supplement stores) crushed and dissolved in a little hot water and then to that add all the oil from a 400 IU capsule of vitamin D and half the oil from a 1000 IU capsule of vitamin E (the oils are human type too) - mix well, cool and give orally, and repeat in 7 days.  Usually within 10 days you will start to see growth of the hair again.  Hope that helps - let me know - Donna
