Golf - Continued training / mental training

Question
I have been playing golf a little over 3 years now and have worked my handicap down to a 7. The only reason my handicap isn't lower is some inconsistency issues with holding it all together for a full 18 holes. I will play 12-14 holes like a pro 2-3 like a struggling amateur and 2-3 struggling to save par.

At this point I am convinced my game may not hit the next level without some type of a golf coach (not just some lessons at the range with the local pro) Someone to learn my game and help develop it to the next level if possible. Where could someone find such a coach?

The other question I had was where can one find training or coaching on the mental improvement on golf, I belive my biggest holdback right now is all in my head....thinking about how great of a round I've got going or the extreme frustration of a poorly played shot(s) on a previous hole are just some of the thoughts that kill my round repeatedly. Where can I find a "mental" coach for the game of golf

thanks in advance for your advice

Doug

Answer
Doug,

You didn't provide some vital information such as how often you practice and play. Regardless, let me provide you with some advice.

Not all lessons with the local pro need to take place on the driving range. Some of the best golf lessons that I have given over the years have happened on the golf course. These are known as playing lessons.

I would arrange these lessons either early in the morning going off the tenth tee box or later in the day going off of #1. The reason for this is that I wanted to have unlimited time to repeat a shot, talk about course management, or ask what the player was thinking prior to hitting a shot. It's quite a discovery to find that most players don't know what to think about.

I believe that you'll be quite surprised at the amount of information that you'll receive. It's a great time to ask questions, get a practice schedule and learn some details on how to score.

On the mental side of the game as you describe you seem to be very normal. Learning to overcome some of the distractions takes time. Finding a good mental coach is something that your local PGA Professional can help you with.

Thanks for the question,

Michael Hoffman
